"What makes a good realtor? A friend of mine, a realtor, asked me that question and I have been giving this some thought this past week. I have dealt with several realtors over the years and two come to my mind as excellent in their profession. One is a gentleman that we have worked with over twenty years buying and selling three properties in Minnesota. The second was a woman who was recommended to us by an acquaintance in a new state in an area where we knew no one. They both have traits in common that I believe make them exceptional in their field of real estate. An excellent realtor:
* Listens well and poses illuminating questions crucial to helping both the client and the realtor understand goals.
* Is financially sophisticated.
* Appears to be enjoying and/or actually enjoys the time spent with the clients.
* Is honest and not self-serving in the selection of properties presented.
* Is well educated and intelligent.
* Seeks to find shared experiences with the clients.
* Lives in the actual area where the clients are looking.
That is my objective, analytic answer to the question.
However, what I will remember about the process of our house search here in Asheville was Molly's energy and sense of humor. She connected with my husband and me very quickly. She made us feel comfortable about our initial inability to set parameters on our search. She had all the requisite skills mentioned above and the intangible people skills that made the process both comfortable and exciting. Buying a house whether it is your first home, your second home, or a retirement home are milestones and should be positive experiences. An excellent realtor would do that for his or her client.
Molly McNichols did just that for us. We had a blast working with her and all of the people she guided us toward in the process: attorney, closer, painter, renovator. She was not only a good realtor, she was a good person."
